Solskjaer appears to have the backing of United head honcho Ed Woodward, and this will presumably show in the transfer market. Despite enduring another inconsistent season under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United appear to be hitting their stride at the right time.

Last Sunday's derby victory over Manchester City was one of the club's best performances under the Norwegian and it means that they are only three points behind fourth-place Chelsea as the season draws to a close.

Still competing in both the Europa League and FA Cup, and with Champions League qualification a real possibility, United have the chance to turn this season into one of real progress.

Nevertheless, United will want to keep building next season and in order to do that, some signings will be required. However, the club will want to reduce their wage bill and move on several players to make way for any potential new arrivals. United's current number one has not had a great season, making three errors leading to goals — the joint second most in the league. The Spanish international has not been at his best and with Dean Henderson impressing on loan at Sheffield United, now might be the time for the club to cash in.

Henderson has stated his preference to return to his parent club at the end of the season, which would give United a ready-made replacement for De Gea. Jesse Lingard has failed to register a single goal or an assist in his 20 Premier League appearances so far this term. The arrival of Bruno Fernandes has also pushed the Warrington-born midfielder down the pecking order at Old Trafford, and with the club linked with summer moves for Jack Grealish, James Maddison and Jadon Sancho, it looks like Lingard's time at the club is up.

Lingard turned 27 in December, and now might be the right time for the England international to start afresh elsewhere. All signs point to that happening this summer. United's top scorer last season with 16 goals in all competitions, World Cup winner Paul Pogba has only played eight times this term. Pogba suffered an ankle injury in September and has been ruled out since Boxing Day.

In that time, speculation about him leaving the club has only increased. This week, it has been reported that the Frenchman has attracted interest from PSG and Juventus, while Pogba has also been linked with Real Madrid several times in the past.

A controversial figure, it wouldn't be a shock if Pogba decides to move on this summer, especially if United fail to qualify for the Champions League. Arriving with plenty of expectation after three-and-a-half excellent years at Arsenal, Alexis Sanchez was unable to replicate his form for United, scoring only five goals in 45 appearances for the Red Devils. Currently on loan at Inter Milan, Sanchez has not flourished in Serie A either, scoring only once in his 10 league appearances so far this term.

Though Inter are currently paying a contribution towards his salary, United will want to get him off the books permanently this summer, which would free up plenty of funds.

The defender could have spent the season on loan at Everton, but a deadline day move fell through and it will come as no surprise if the club seek a permanent move for the Argentine at the end of the season. With Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof at its heart, United's defence looks relatively settled and Rojo is certainly surplus to requirements. By Dan Haygarth. Video Loading Video Unavailable.

The nine Manchester United players out on loan and how they’re faring

Man Utd players have improved dramatically under Solskjaer but there is still room for improvement with two key squad members. The year-old has scored only once in this season's European campaign and although he has shown some glimpses of his undoubted talent, has been largely inconsistent over recent weeks, as well as being hampered by injury. Martial was poor at the Nou Camp and has been off form in the league of late. His form was interrupted by injury and he has struggled for rhythm since his return.

Man United need to sell at least five players from their bloated and aging squad in order to become Premier League and Champions League contenders once again. The Red Devils have now lost all but one of their last five games, conceding 11 goals while crashing out of Europe at the hands of Barcelona and slipping down a peg in the race for a top-four spot in the Premier League.

Manchester United are in the midst of a crisis and have just 12 days of the transfer window to save their entire season. A loss at Anfield to Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League was not as bad as many feared, but the league table nevertheless remains a miserable sight. With only 15 games to play, they have to close a five-point gap to Chelsea in order to maintain hopes of qualifying for the Champions League through league play. There is no longer any margin of safety. The bleakest news came when it was confirmed that Marcus Rashford could be out for a couple of months.

List of Manchester United F.C. players (25–99 appearances)

Manchester United will soon have a decision to make over a number of their first-team players whose contracts are expiring across the next two summers. As is customary at United, most of the players listed below have an option of a further year in their contract that the club can activate to avoid losing them for free. However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may still want to get a few of them off the books as he looks to rebuild his squad. Express Sport have analysed the players United should look to move on and those who must be given a new contract. Grant will be 37 in January but United would struggle to find a better option than him to play that role. Another player who has had his injury problems and there seems no obvious spot for him in the United side going forward. Aaron Wan-Bissaka looks set to be the right-back for a few years and Axel Tuanzebe may have the nod over him in a potential centre-back role. Matic is linked with a January move to Inter Milan and that would be for the best for all parties. A regular in the side this season but if United want to progress, they need better options than Young.

The six players Man Utd must get rid of and four they need to give a new contract

The incident has been the only blemish on a season in which he has won his first two caps for the Republic of Ireland. His future at Old Trafford remains unclear, however, with David de Gea firmly established as first-choice despite a number of errors creeping into his game. The situation has led to speculation Chelsea could bid for the year-old in the summer, although recent reports suggest United will try to tie Henderson down to a long-term deal. Can't wait for him to be United's No. Pereira is the only member of the trio to make a senior appearance for United, but keeping three clean sheets in 20 appearances for the bottom side in the Scottish Premiership is hardly a good look, especially now he has been dropped from the starting XI after conceding 16 goals in his last three league appearances. Smalling has at least provided one United loanee with a success story in Serie A, shining for Roma and missing just one league game since breaking into their starting XI.
